Coronavirus Pandemic: Chinese firms look to develop alternative jabs that could soon hit market

新冠肺炎疫情蔓延：中国企业致力开发新型新冠肺炎疫苗，可能很快进入市场

Several COVID-19 vaccines are already on the market, but that doesn't mean the development of alternatives is slowing down. Some Chinese companies are developing their own versions. Our reporter Yang Chengxi has the details.

目前，已经有部分新冠肺炎疫苗上市，但这并不意味着其他新冠肺炎疫苗的研发速度正在放缓。一些中国企业正抓紧研发新冠肺炎疫苗。请看详细报道。

In this medical zone in China's Taizhou, many researchers are spending their time trying to develop and test vaccines.

YANG CHENGXI Taizhou, Jiangsu Province "Currently, a total of seven COVID-19 vaccines from research institutions around the world are in the bioanalytical testing process at this center. Four of them are undergoing clinical trials."

在泰州医药高新技术产业园区疫苗工程中心，研究人员正致力于新冠肺炎疫苗的研发和测试。

据了解，目前共有来自全球研究机构的7种新冠肺炎疫苗在这里进行生物分析检测，其中4种正在进行临床试验。

The institutions chose this area because of its well-regarded infrastructure.

PENG FUZHONG Deputy Director, Vaccine Engineering Center Taizhou Medical New & Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone "Companies here can share our equipment and labs. For example, if a company wanted to build a pilot production workshop, it would take over 10 million yuan in investment. But here they can rent ours for just over a million yuan a year."

这些机构之所以选择这里，是因为这里具备良好的基础设施。

泰州医药高新技术产业园区疫苗工程中心副主任彭福中说：“企业可以使用我们的设备和实验室。举例来说，如果一家公司要建立一个试点生产车间，它可能需要投资一千万元。但是在中国医药城，他们可以租用我们的车间，一年只需要一百多万元。”

This company is among several in the zone that's developing its own COVID-19 vaccine.

AN YOUCAI Chairman, Ab&b Bio-Tech "China's pharmacopeia is of a very high standard in terms of all aspects of vaccine development, higher than many countries and also that of the WHO. We believe the speed and quality in which Chinese companies develop vaccines can gradually catch up with international pharmaceutical giants."

在泰州医药高新技术产业园区，有好几家企业正在从事着新冠肺炎疫苗的研发，江苏中慧元通生物科技有限公司就是其中之一。

江苏中慧元通生物科技有限公司董事长安有才说：“中国药典在疫苗研制的各个方面都有很高的标准，比许多国家和世界卫生组织的标准都高。我们相信中国企业研发疫苗的速度和质量可以逐步赶上国际制药巨头。”

This huge complex under construction belongs to another company in the zone. Upon completion, it will be used to produce HPV and shingles vaccines. But the firm is also developing one for COVID-19.

这个正在建造中的庞大建筑群属于开发区的江苏瑞科生物经济技术有限公司。项目建成后将用于生产HPV疫苗和带状疱疹疫苗。同时，该公司继续推进新冠肺炎疫苗研发工作。

LIU YONG Chairman, RecBio "Ours is a vaccine using recombinant technology, and we're preparing for clinical trials. We plan to enter production in the fourth quarter of 2021."

江苏瑞科生物经济技术有限公司董事长刘勇说：“我们的疫苗使用重组技术，目前正在为临床试验做准备，计划在2021年四季度投产。”

Both vaccines are looking ahead to trials and could soon be joining major Chinese and international players, providing an alternative jab for the world.

目前这两种新冠肺炎疫苗都在试验当中，可能很快将在中国和世界范围内使用，成为接种新冠肺炎疫苗的新选择。
